1 Introduction

This document describes how to add a SoundFont™-based sound generation module to dSPACE

ControlDesk. This technique enables sound to be added to dSPACE ControlDesk experiments.

The sound module consists of Python scripts and a binary library file.

Because sound standards like the MIDI interface and soundfonts are used, the sound is generated

in hardware, giving maximum processor time to the real-time simulations. This also means that

customers can select their sound hardware from the mainstream sound cards from Creative Labs,

which are available on the market at a competitive price tag of approximately $100.

The sound generation module was mainly developed with automotive engine sound in mind. The

SoundFont™ bundled with this module was therefore created from a recording of a car engine.

There are sounds that fade away after being triggered and a continuous engine sound achieved by

playing a sample in an endless loop: When the sample end is reached, playback starts from the

beginning again.

The sound characteristic can be changed by modifying the SoundFont™ file.

2 Hardware and Software Requirements

This chapter describes the requirements for the hardware and the software.

2.1 Hardware Setup

The sound module was developed and tested with a Creative SoundBlaster PCI 512.

Additionally, it was tested with Creative SoundBlaster Audigy Player SB1394.

You are recommend to use a card from Creative Technology Ltd. only, since no other sound

hardware has been tested. Tested soundcard drivers with Soundfont support are available for

following operating systems and soundcards:

2.2 Software Setup

Integration is possible only on a PC with dSPACE ControlDesk 2.3 installed. The latest sound

driver version of the Creative Technology Ltd. sound card must also be installed. Make sure that

you select a driver pack that includes configuration tools, e.g. SoundFont™ support, midi

keyboard etc.

Use only with ControlDesk Version 2.3 and above. The tested operating systems are Microsoft

MS-Windows NT, MS-Windows 2000 and MS-Windows XP.

Due to the use of the SoundFont™ standard, you can add your own sound samples to the

SoundFont™ provided and change the looping sound characteristic generated by the module.
